raduation is a special milestone, a celebration of years of hard work, growth, and achievement. For many graduates and their families, capturing this occasion with stunning photographs is just as important as the ceremony itself. Among the most iconic backdrops for graduation photos, the Library of Congress stands out as a symbol of knowledge, history, and grandeur. In this blog post, we’ll explore why the Library of Congress is a fantastic location for graduation photography, how to plan the perfect session, and tips for making your Library of Congress graduation photos unforgettable.
Why Choose the Library of Congress for Graduation Photos?
The Library of Congress, located on Capitol Hill, is the largest library in the world and a national treasure. With its breathtaking architecture, ornate interiors, and lush surroundings, it offers a multitude of picturesque settings for graduation photos. Here’s why it’s a standout choice:
- Historic Ambience: The Library’s stunning neoclassical architecture, Paris-inspired outdoor lamps, and intricate mosaics provide a timeless backdrop that adds a sense of gravitas to your achievement.
- Versatile Locations: From the iconic staircase with its marble columns, the Court of Neptune Fountain, and the beautiful adjacent Supreme Court building and gardens, make the Library of Congress one of my favorite locations in Washington, DC.
- Symbolic Value: As a repository of knowledge and culture, the Library of Congress perfectly represents the culmination of your academic journey.

Planning Your Library of Congress Session
Securing Permissions and Timing
While outdoor photography is generally permitted, there is always a chance in DC that we will be asked to leave (though it has never happened before, just keep it in mind when planning anything in DC).
DC sessions always happen at sunrise, to maximize the beautiful lighting, but most importantly, to avoid the crowds. That ensures we basically have the place to ourselves and don’t have to compete for locations, backdrops, and avoid anyone in the background of your photos.
Outfits and Accessories
Don’t forget your cap, gown, cords, stoles, or any awards and memorabilia that showcase your accomplishments.
Make sure you steam, iron, and dust your graduation gowns, especially using a lint remover on velvety PhD caps.
Tip: Bring comfortable shoes to wear from location A to B if you have uncomfortable heels on, and a big heavy coat for April and May cold mornings, a whind-chill in DC can make it several degrees colder especially before the sun is up and on us.

Tips for Flawless Graduation Photos
Natural light is my preferred way to photograph, and the LoC offers mostly shade for the first hour of the day, which makes it perfect for even photos without harsh shadows. The Capitol across the street receives first morning light, so it can also peek into some of your photos if that’s important to you. This is also why the best time to go is at sunrise.
For added variety and beautiful greenery, I love to use the Supreme Court gardens next door; they are always a showstopper in April-May and even into the Summer months. If we’re lucky, there is even a chance we can sneak some photos at the majestic staircases of the Supreme Court as well, though there are no permits required; the only way to know if we are allowed is to show up and ask the guards.
But Cat, what if it rains? The LoC is not a rain-friendly location, unfortunately. However I have photographed several clients on drizzly days that came out of town and did not mind that it was a bit wet outside. It aligned that they are all accostumed to that type of weather being from the Pacific Nortwest, but I understand not everyone is willing to do that. If it rains, don’t fret, we have other beautiful DC locations to choose from.
