If you’re here you’re probably thinking, should I have a wedding first look? And I LOVE the idea of first looks! So, let’s get to what’s a wedding first look, and should you have one?

The first look is a recent trend where the bride and groom get to see each other before the ceremony. Although it may not be traditional, it’s so worth it and you should consider it for your own wedding.

I opted for it on my own wedding and I am SO GLAD I did it. One of the main reasons to have the first look is that you get to share that moment JUST between you two!

Sometimes it can be hard to spend time alone during your wedding day, and it helps calm you down if you’re nervous.

You want him to see you down the aisle and be like “Aaah”, but trust me: He will still be when you walk down the aisle, but having that first moment up close and without any guests around is so much more intimate and special.

Whenever couples decide to do a first look it can be a very emotional moment for the two of them, it is when eyes get teary and the groom gets to see how stunning his bride is, and tell her that too!

Needless to say, it is the PERFECT opportunity for once-in-a-lifetime photos!

Most brides don’t realize that even though their grooms think they look gorgeous, they are unable to tell her that until after the ceremony.

Another reason you might want to consider doing a first look is that it helps photographers tremendously! Weddings days are always on a tight schedule.

Having a first look not only allows you to have A LOT more portraits done, it also lets you spend much less time after the ceremony doing portraits with the groom, and enjoying your party.

Oh, and BONUS, your hair, and makeup will be fresh! So your makeup will be flawless during those portraits, but might not be after your ceremony.

Your guests won’t have to wait for you as long as on regular weddings without a first look. When ALL portraits have to be done after your ceremony (typically family formals, wedding party, and bride and groom portraits) it can take a while, up to one hour!

One hour, sometimes more. If you’re dreaming of a ton of portraits and poses with lots of variety, you must do a first look on your wedding day

And lastly, LIGHT! Everyone knows how photographers need light, and great light yields great photos! Depending on your ceremony time, what time of the year it is, and where you are getting married, you may not have enough natural light left after the ceremony for beautiful portraits, and that is CRUCIAL. Having a first look can solve that problem.

I hope you decide on doing a first look, aside from getting amazing images, it’s an experience I wouldn’t dream of missing out on.
